Shooting Some Surfing
A day at the beach with some of the best in the world.
By Tony Donaldson | August 07, 2012

It's been a while since I've shot any surfing, so when friend Lon Levin invited me down to the U.S. Open in Huntington Beach, I jumped at the chance. Besides, how wrong can you go with a day at the beach?

You can't go wrong with some of the best surfers on the planet. I was down there with a little shorter glass than I wanted, but thanks to being able to shoot with 36 megapixels on the Nikon D800, and change crop modes on the fly, I made do from the shore nicely.

There were a few people there...

Announcing was legendary "Rockin' Fig":
And apparently, I wasn't the only one there with a camera...

And of course, there's the bikinis and people watching. One of the funniest trends was not only people walking around with "Free hugs" on their chests, but girls with funny stuff written on their lower backs.

It was a good day to hit the beach with my girlfriend, gave her a camera and let her play, too. Really nice to watch some amazing surfing and take a little of the rust off and get a tan, all at the same time!
Get out there and try shooting something you haven't in a while!

Leica set to launch a mini-M .... interesting! I'm hoping for fixed lens full frame. http://t.co/X2K2HWaB7r
