New Nikon Rumor Causes a Stir

Wired.com has posted the supposedly leaked Nikon 2009/2010 product roadmap, with some really exciting rumors.

These are all rumors, though they do seem credible and/or possible. They come from Czecch forum Grafika On-Line, supposedly from the UK from an anonymous source at a company that provides Nikon UK with IT services.

They list a variety of lenses, including a AF-S Nikkor 300 mm f/4G VR and Nikkor AF-S VR 400 mm f/5.6G (I wish they’d make an AF version of the 400mm f/3.5) and even a new variant of their DC lenses, the AF-S Nikkor 105 mm f/2G DC.

A bevy of bodies are listed, including a D4 (15.7 megapixels, sounds like the perfect amount, up to 16fps, 1080p video @ 30fps, ISO 200-12,800) and D4x (30.2 MP, 6fps and 1080p video at 30fps). On the consumer side, the D700x, which has been getting more and more rumor mill buzz, is said to be using the same 24.5 MP sensor as the D3x. It adds HD video at 1080p. It’s still all rumors, but again, seems at least somewhat credible. I’d love it if Nikon would add a few things to their pro cameras that have either been there before or have been in consumer or prosumer cameras. If the D100 can have a built-in LCD grid, basically an E screen you can turn on and off, why can’t a professional DSLR? And how about Wifi built-in? Some phones and point-and-shoot cameras have them. Not having to buy a new Wifi device for every camera would be nice. Maybe make it 802.11n spec and actually easy to set up an ad-hoc connection while you’re at it. How about built-in GPS? Also, way back in the D1x days (and even the Kodak 14n) you could have a PocketWizard unit built into the camera, with relay and other controls from the Multi-Max. Built right into the camera.

Oh, and how about ISO you can dial down to 25 or even 12? Pan shots without heavy refraction or 4 ND filters screwed onto the lens. Thirty megapixels and amazing AF performance are fantastic, but give us other tools we can use to make life easier, as well. But maybe that’s just me.

It prints, scans, copies and faxes, more wirelessly than you even expect.

I’ve had the chance to use HP’s new Envy 110 e-All-in-one printer/copier/scanner/fax, and I love it. It’s amazingly easy to set up, has it’s own touch screen to walk you through connecting it to your Wi-Fi (and a LOT more, but we’ll get to that in a bit).

A safe way to archive and store your old hard drives.
