Elinchrom Quadra review compared to Ranger

Dan Carr | 09/28- 10:52 PM

image

For the last three years I have been using the Elinchrom Ranger RX for the majority of my strobed work.  Sometimes I use some Nikon speedlights for fill, but the Ranger is my key light.  I have used it in the rain, in blizzards, in -32 degrees Celsius and it has traveled around the world to Alaska, Japan, New Zealand twice and everywhere in between.  I can depend on this strobe, and it has never let me down.  I have the RX version which is slightly lighter weight than the RX Speed.  For me, recycling time is not such a big deal as most of what I am shooting is one off action that normally requires at least several minutes between shots anyway.  Despite being the lighter weight version of the Ranger RX family, it still weighs in at a hefty 8KG just for the pack (no heads or cables).  Last year Elinchrom announced the new Elinchrom Quadra.  A lower powered sibling to my big Ranger, that weighed in at a much more tolerable 3.65KG.  Recently I finally got the opportunity to test a Quadra setup so here are some thoughts on it and something of a comparison to my now very rugged looking Ranger RX………….

Digging deeper: Exposure Control Under Daylight Conditions

image

Cinematography, photography, and videography are undeniably machine-based crafts.  Just as a painter needs to understand the character and limitations of her brushes, so too do we need to understand the nuance of our camera systems. A mastery of technical craft doesn’t assure the ascension to Art but it certain helps to smooth the path.  While the mastery of our craft can become a fascinating obsession in itself, my preference is to take the long view and treat technique as an enjoyable means to a gratifying end.

Three new backpacks for shooting in crowded urban settings released

PPC News Staff | 12/22- 04:28 PM

Think Tank Photo has launched a new design in photo backpacks, the StreetWalker™ series.

image

With the three new backpacks’ slim vertical profile, photographers can navigate crowded places and public transportation while still being able to access professional photographic equipment. This solves a significant problem experienced by photographers shooting in urban and other crowded environments: getting the shot in spaces that allow little room for navigating. Their unique unisex design makes them useful for both men and women photographers.

Photography: What’s real, what’s not and does it matter?

Matt Brandon | 05/08- 07:38 PM

Is there such a thing as integrity in a photograph?

I got some flack on Facebook about a past post on my blog . I received a comment from a reader or two stating they felt that what they saw in the produced images was not real. Meaning, after running through my workflow in Lightroom the images no longer represented reality. I have gotten this kind of feedback many times in the past. I think people are rather shocked at seeing a photo “undressed”. It’s a bit like seeing a high-fashion model on the streets without any makeup, it can be scary.
