First impressions of the Canon 70-300 f4-5.6 L IS

Dan Carr | 11/22- 08:00 AM

image

I first wrote about this lens back in September when it was announced by Canon prior to the Photokina trade show alongside a slew of other lenses.  This one was particularly interesting though because like the 8-15 f4 that was also revealed, it didn’t previously exist in the lineup at all.  There are very few gaps in the EF lens lineup so it’s not often a totally new one comes along and I was excited to get my hands on one for my business.  I often use the 70-200 f4 L IS for my ski photography work because I shoot outside when the light is good, and I appreciate the lighter weight when compared with the the f2.8 version.  With the new 70-300mm I could get an extra 100m reach in an even smaller (shorter at least) package.  As soon as they became available I ordered one and took some time to compare it with the 70-200 f4 IS.

The final installment this week of information on the recent Canon lens announcements.  This time we are taking a closer look at the updated super telephone lenses.  The “Big Whites”.  Newly updated versions of the 300mm and 400mm will be available by the end of the year and uncharacteristically, Canon also allowed us a glimpse at some updates to follow next year!

A look at the Canon 70-300 f4-5.6 L IS

Dan Carr | 09/09- 03:08 PM

image

A few days ago I began to take a closer look at some of Canon’s newly announced lenses.  Starting off with the 8-15mm f4 L and now moving on to another totally new lens for the Canon L series lineup.  The 70-300 f4-5.6 L IS zoom.  A lens that offers a larger than normal zoom range in a small, weather sealed package with the latest image stabilization.

Thoughts on the Canon 8-15mm f4 L

Dan Carr | 09/07- 12:41 PM

image

Last week I wrote some of my thoughts on the new Canon EOS 60D and compared it to the already popular 7D.  This week I’m going to take a look at some of the lenses that Canon announced on the same day as the 60D.  Personally I can’t remember a day when Canon has announced so many new products all in one day, and some of the new lenses they introduced are worth taking a look at.  First up, the 8-15mm fisheye zoom.

Heading to Vancouver for Two Events

Scott Gentry | 02/13- 03:30 PM

What do you bring when you want to shoot video and photos, but need to pack light?

image

My wife happens to work for an Olympic sponsor and I was lucky enough to tag along in Beijing, and now I’m prepping to leave for a quick three day, two event romp to Vancouver.

The trip this time presents some unique challenges in terms of weather, logistics and my personal shot goals.  The first thing I needed to consider is TSA flight requirements and what I’d have to check, vs. carry on.  Additionally I needed to check Olympic guidelines for any restrictions on equipment at events.  So far I’m in luck as the international carry-on rules seem to have settled a tad since Christmas.  Additionally, according to Vancouver2010.com, it seems that as long as I’m not re-broadcasting live, I am OK.  There are some restrictions there, but nothing I can’t overcome.

Super slo-mo shows how a DSLR shutter and mirror work

Matt Jeppsen | 12/07- 06:07 PM

5000fps video down the barrel of a Nikon D3 shooting continuous 11fps

image

Ever wonder what exactly happens when you press that shutter release button on your DSLR camera? The following video shows the sequence of events in excruciating detail. It’s video shot at 5000 frames-per-second, looking at the internals of a Nikon D3 camera shooting 11fps continuous. As an added bonus, they show the lens stopping down to f/16 in tandem. The result is beautiful, and surprisingly violent. Watch below.

5D Mark II Video, Part Two

Bruce Dorn | 12/23- 10:50 AM

Digging deeper: Exposure Control Under Daylight Conditions

image

Cinematography, photography, and videography are undeniably machine-based crafts.  Just as a painter needs to understand the character and limitations of her brushes, so too do we need to understand the nuance of our camera systems. A mastery of technical craft doesn’t assure the ascension to Art but it certain helps to smooth the path.  While the mastery of our craft can become a fascinating obsession in itself, my preference is to take the long view and treat technique as an enjoyable means to a gratifying end.

Three new backpacks for shooting in crowded urban settings released

PPC News Staff | 12/22- 04:28 PM

Think Tank Photo has launched a new design in photo backpacks, the StreetWalker™ series.

image

With the three new backpacks’ slim vertical profile, photographers can navigate crowded places and public transportation while still being able to access professional photographic equipment. This solves a significant problem experienced by photographers shooting in urban and other crowded environments: getting the shot in spaces that allow little room for navigating. Their unique unisex design makes them useful for both men and women photographers.

Photography: What’s real, what’s not and does it matter?

Matt Brandon | 05/08- 07:38 PM

Is there such a thing as integrity in a photograph?

I got some flack on Facebook about a past post on my blog . I received a comment from a reader or two stating they felt that what they saw in the produced images was not real. Meaning, after running through my workflow in Lightroom the images no longer represented reality. I have gotten this kind of feedback many times in the past. I think people are rather shocked at seeing a photo “undressed”. It’s a bit like seeing a high-fashion model on the streets without any makeup, it can be scary.
