Letus Hawk Viewfinder with Quick Release system review
Dan Carr | 09/22- 10:35 AM
For serious video shooting with a DSLR you need to have a separate viewfinder that magnifies the image on your LCD. Not only do they keep the sun from your screen to aid your framing and composition but they also allow you to accurately focus with the very narrow DOF that comes from shooting with these types of cameras. There are already many viewfinders out there but the Hawk VF from Letus is one of the newer ones. Let’s take a look at the new aluminum version and also reveal their brand new quick release system!

Leica introduces limited edition Titanium M9
Dan Carr | 09/21- 11:26 AM
At Photokina today in Germany, Leica has released a new version of the popular M9 full frame digital rangefinder camera. The M9 has been almost impossible to get hold of since its launch due to it’s popularity and with this special edition only available in 500 units I think this will be even harder to find! Featuring a titanium body and a matching titanium coated Summilux 35mm lens as well as new digitally projected frame lines in the viewfinder.

Really Right Stuff BH-40 ballhead review
Dan Carr | 09/06- 01:03 AM
A solid ballhead is something that every good photographer should have in their kit. Just like buying a tripod, if you buy the right one it will last a lifetime because unlike today’s cameras and lenses, technology of modern ballheads is relatively simple and changes very little. Instead it all comes down to manufacturing quality and machining accuracy to produce a perfect, solid platform for your camera.

Canon 60D Vs 7D
Dan Carr | 09/02- 03:42 PM
Browsing some websites and forums this morning I noticed a lot of discussion about the new Canon 60D and how it compares with the 7D. I can understand this, at first glance it might seem like the 60D has made the 7D somewhat obsolete but that really is not the case. A closer look at the specs reveals a camera that more carefully fits into the “advanced amateur” category than previous XXD line cameras because of course the 7D did not exist when the 50D was released. The camera that is best for you will depend partly on your budget (there is a $400 price difference) but also partly on your intended shooting medium. Video or photos ?

Heading to Vancouver for Two Events
Scott Gentry | 02/13- 03:30 PM
What do you bring when you want to shoot video and photos, but need to pack light?
My wife happens to work for an Olympic sponsor and I was lucky enough to tag along in Beijing, and now I’m prepping to leave for a quick three day, two event romp to Vancouver.
The trip this time presents some unique challenges in terms of weather, logistics and my personal shot goals. The first thing I needed to consider is TSA flight requirements and what I’d have to check, vs. carry on. Additionally I needed to check Olympic guidelines for any restrictions on equipment at events. So far I’m in luck as the international carry-on rules seem to have settled a tad since Christmas. Additionally, according to Vancouver2010.com, it seems that as long as I’m not re-broadcasting live, I am OK. There are some restrictions there, but nothing I can’t overcome.

Super slo-mo shows how a DSLR shutter and mirror work
Matt Jeppsen | 12/07- 06:07 PM
5000fps video down the barrel of a Nikon D3 shooting continuous 11fps
Ever wonder what exactly happens when you press that shutter release button on your DSLR camera? The following video shows the sequence of events in excruciating detail. It’s video shot at 5000 frames-per-second, looking at the internals of a Nikon D3 camera shooting 11fps continuous. As an added bonus, they show the lens stopping down to f/16 in tandem. The result is beautiful, and surprisingly violent. Watch below.

LEICA D-LUX 4 ‘Safari’
Scott Gentry | 06/16- 10:30 PM
New special edition features olive green finish
Leica Camera AG, Solms, presents a new special edition in the D-Lux 4 series: the LEICA D-LUX 4 ‘Safari.’ Following the introduction of the Leica M8.2 ‘Safari’ at the beginning of this year, the LEICA D-LUX 4 ‘Safari’ is the first compact Leica camera with the same olive green outdoor look. This special limited edition will be available in August 2009.
A durable, waterproof carrying case is included with the camera to complete the set. It offers ample room for the camera and optional accessories for the D-LUX 4 collection such as a handgrip, optical viewfinder or flash. Additionally, the back of the case has a compartment containing a nylon “rain cape” that can be pulled out to cover the whole case and protect it from the elements.
The body of the LEICA D-LUX 4 ‘Safari’ features an anodised olive green surface finish which is particularly resistant to wear and guarantees long-term protection against inadvertent damage. Like all models in the LEICA D-LUX 4 series, the LEICA D-LUX 4 ‘Safari’ has a tough metal body manufactured exclusively from the finest materials.
Similar to the D-LUX 4, the ‘Safari’ edition’s technical features offer versatile options for any number of different photographic situations. With its high-performance lens, lightning-fast image processing, well thought-out controls and optional accessories, the D-LUX 4 ‘Safari’ is a genuine compact system camera.

Underwater Housing for the Canon 5D MKII
Scott Gentry | 05/21- 10:07 AM
Despite the price tag equal to the Camera body itself…I want one.
When you consider a camera that can shoot such spectacular imagery as the Canon 5D MKII, the price tag of $2,900 might not be that far out of reach.
Sea&Sea just released this baby and it’ll hit 60 meters in depth in stride. So now I can shoot spectacular stills as well as 1080p.

A photographer always needs more storage space so buy them a new hard drive.

Christmas gift ideas for the photographer - Part 2
PPC News Staff | 11/26- 09:17 PM
Memory, more memory, and faster memory
Today I’m going to recommend a great gift that every photographer who shoots with a digital camera always needs more of, memory cards - but first a word of caution for you who don’t know about camera gear - be sure that whatever memory card you buy it will work with that particular brand and model number camera that your photographer owns. Digital cameras accept only certain sizes of memory cards and there are several formats/types of memory cards on the market.
