Browsing some websites and forums this morning I noticed a lot of discussion about the new Canon 60D and how it compares with the 7D. I can understand this, at first glance it might seem like the 60D has made the 7D somewhat obsolete but that really is not the case. A closer look at the specs reveals a camera that more carefully fits into the “advanced amateur” category than previous XXD line cameras because of course the 7D did not exist when the 50D was released. The camera that is best for you will depend partly on your budget (there is a $400 price difference) but also partly on your intended shooting medium. …

Photography meets Cinematography on PhotoCine
Since this is my first post at the newly formed HDSLR Coalition, I think I’ll tell you a bit about where I’m coming from and where I’ll be taking you as a reader. The term PhotoCine is a combination of Photo from photography and Cine from cinematography. You can tell from my bio that I have a strong photographic background and am more than a little comfortable working in the digital realm. I’m also comfortable on movie and television sets and have known and/or worked with some really talented people in Hollywood.

Adjusting the View
Photographers are becoming video producers. Young men and women and becoming politicians, doctors, teachers and more. Sports greats are becoming business professionals. Actors are becoming criminals. Criminals are becoming philosophers. Fast food is becoming healthy (well… it could happen). The Internet is simply becoming. The more we are merging life’s styles and tools into a blob of multi-tasking multi-platform one “click does it all” methodologies - the more we are opening the doors to a world divided. What does it all mean? I don’t know, but that last sentence was fun to write. Online writers are becoming the media, the educators,…

The DSC 102db chart doesn’t lie: This is what it tells us about how the 5D sees the world.
The Canon 5D does a remarkable job of making HD images, considering that it was originally never intended to do so. So how much dynamic range can it really capture? Thanks to the DSC 102db (17-stop) latitude chart, we now have an objective answer.

Do you have any advise? Tips 1 through 10 of 50 tips on how to succeed as a photographer
This article is the first in a series of five that will provide informative and (likely) heavily opinionated suggestions on how to succeed in photography. I received an email through one of my websites. The web visitor asked: “I am starting out in professional photography and admire your work. I was wondering if you had any advice.” I’ve taught photography to many including nine-year old (underprivileged) children. BTW: they make the best students of the art and I’ll talk about that more in future articles. Narrowing “it” down to a list of 10 or more things you’d want to do to succeed in photography was a fun challenge for me.…

Legendary ASC discusses how the HDSLR changed his life, and how it will change yours…
When I called Shane Hurlbut, he was just returning from a shoot with the US Marine Corps in North Carolina. Shane is one of the most visible and vocal proponents of using the HDSLR for cinematic applications. From the first time Shane held the 5D Mark II, he instinctively knew the technology would not only change the film industry, but the world as well.

Two new cameras with truly innovative features
If there is a war between manufacturers for the greatest share of the HDSLR market, then Sony is launching a shock and awe campaign with no end in sight. Their latest assault, the second in a month, is the announcement of two new DSLRs, the α55 and α33. These two cameras seem to aggressively target the Canon T2i and 7D head on.
