Well well well, here it is.  Finally.  And I can’t help but feel a bit underwhelmed by it.  To start with the naming system is just plain ridiculous.  1 Nikon . 1 Mount . 1 Nikkor .  How did they come up with that ?  It’s going to cause havoc with searching for products on the internet and if you give up there and walk into a store you’re going to have to ask for 1 1 Nikon 1 Mount camera with 2 1 Nikkor lenses.  Clear as mud.

Nikon obviously spent time quite some miniaturizing the cameras just as Sony and Panasonic did with their variations to be able to claim “lightest and smallest” but again the lenses look overly large for pocket usage and and 2.7x crop factor lens is extremely disappointing.  Quite a bit smaller than micro four thirds, yet the pricing is quite high on the Nikon 1 system.  They are certainly going to be playing catch up and I think they really needed to bring some sort of standout feature or design to the table to make them jump out from the crowd.  They really haven’t done that, except perhaps with the lurid pink version of the J1 and the matching pink lens.  That will stand out in the crowd, but for all the wrong reasons.  The rest of the camera’s design appears to be devoid of any kind of character where others like Sony and Fujifilm have been making some gorgeous looking little cameras recently.  The V1 and J1 are probably the dullest looking camera’s I’ve seen since the Sigma DP1 and that’s a brush that nobody wants to be painted with.

The proof will be in the pudding, but unfortunately I’m just not even tempted to taste it.  It does make you wander what Canon will do though ..... Nikon seems to have gone for ‘fashionably late’ to the party, did Canon just loose their invitation or are they arriving later as the entertainment ?

Canon Announces The EOS-1D C - Packs 4K Video Into The EOS-1D X !

Dan Carr | 04/12- 09:48 AM

Is this the ultimate combo cam ?  18MP stills & 4K video

With just a few days until NAB 2012 Canon have unveiled two new additions to their Cinema EOS lineup.  You can read all about the C500, their new cinema camera, over on our sister site PVC but here on PPC I want to talk a little bit more about the new EOS-1D C which I think is safe to say is now Canon’s flagship HDSLR.  Combining all the photographic features of the previously announced EOS-1D X, but now adding 4k video recording as well, Canon have produced something unique.
