Manfrotto’s New Products for NAB

Dan Carr | 04/19

LED Panels, Fluid Heads, Support Accessories and More.

Manfrotto came to NAB last week with several interesting new products useful for both stills shooters and DSLR movie makers.  Fluid heads, LED light panels as well as some interesting accessories for supporting all manner of things from flashes to remote cameras.

Manfrotto LED Panels

These light panels share the same technology as those from the popular manufacturer Litepanels.  I found them to be ergonomically more pleasing than the Litepanels ones though and overall these look to be a great addition to the Manfrotto lineup.  They come in several different sizes as shown in the photo below.  The Pocket and Mini sizes though seemed to be fairly limited in use though, they really were quite small.  Perhaps a nice match for a small camera like a Panasonic GF2 of Sony NEX5 if you like to shoot video with one of those.  If you have a DSLR then I’d definitely recommend looking at the larger Midi and Maxima sizes.  The panels are simply operated by one knob on the side to adjust brightness and they are very lightweight.  I’m thinking of picking one of these up myself and although not confirmed yet, one representative told me that the mid size one would sell for about $100 which seems like a great price.

Manfrotto Photo Movie Head

Manfrotto are kindly supplying me with one of these in the next week or so for testing so stay tuned for more on this interesting product.  Essentially it solves the problem of what sort of head to buy if you like to shoot both photos and videos with your DSLR.  Providing a 3 -Axis adjusting head that transforms into a fluid head for panning and tilting when shooting video.

Manfrotto Snake Arm

Personally I’m a big fan of the Manfrotto Magic Arm for supporting remote cameras, flashes in tight spaces or any number of other uses.  It’s a bulky accessory though and the new Snake Arm solves that problem.  The Snake is loosened by one knob on the end and that allows you to position the collection of right angled sections to position things where you need them.  Snake Arm is made of 4 curved tube sections that are completely free to move in any angle and it can be mounted at one end using two spigots with 3/8 threadings and 5/8 attachments, while at the other is a 5/8 attachment.  This is one of those things that you didnt know you needed until it was invented , but now I know a million ways to use this thing!

This one I’m not so sure about but perhaps you can think of a use for it… I’m sure it would be one of those things if you had it you’d find a use for it !

Manfrotto 502HD and 509HD

Two new heads from Manfrotto bring their bridging technology first seen in the 504HD, to the rest of the lineup.  The 502HD will replace the ubiquitous 501 HDV.

NAB 2012: Camera Support

Adam Wilt | 05/05

A few of the interesting bits ‘n’ bobs that make cameras usable.

At NAB I found support vendors at the affordable end of the spectrum I hadn’t seen before, comfy Aaton-style handgrips, F65 tweaks by Carlos Acosta, and a “drive-by demo” of a handy zoom/focusing lever.

LED Light Tests: Flesh Tone and Color Comparison Shootout

Art Adams | 04/09

There’s one color that will always bother us if it’s wrong: flesh tone. We tested ten common LED lights against a tungsten Inkie and a Kino Flo… come see the results!

Color comparison tests are hard. Color science is witchcraft, and objective color is exceedingly difficult to quantify. Comparison is really the only way to judge color, so we tested ten LED lights against two tungsten Tweenies and a 3200K 2’x4…

Canon Announces The EOS-1D C - Packs 4K Video Into The EOS-1D X !

Dan Carr | 04/12- 09:48 AM

Is this the ultimate combo cam ?  18MP stills & 4K video

With just a few days until NAB 2012 Canon have unveiled two new additions to their Cinema EOS lineup.  You can read all about the C500, their new cinema camera, over on our sister site PVC but here on PPC I want to talk a little bit more about the new EOS-1D C which I think is safe to say is now Canon’s flagship HDSLR.  Combining all the photographic features of the previously announced EOS-1D X, but now adding 4k video recording as well, Canon have produced something unique.
