Dan Carr

Born in the UK , Dan took a gap year in Whistler, British Columbia after high-school which planted the seed for a mountain obsession. While his passion for mountain life took a backseat as he finished an Aerospace Engineering degree in England, it wasn't long before he returned to the mountains to start shooting his friends in action. Dan spends 8 months of the year chasing winter around the globe shooting the worlds best skiers and snowboarders for companies like Oakley, Salomon and Columbia. His work has been featured in ski and snowboard magazines from Japan to Canada and everywhere in between as well as innumerable commercial campaigns for an ever widening list of clients.

He now lives in the resort town of Whistler when he is not on the road, which provides the perfect backdrop for many other types of adventure, landscape and nature photography. Since starting a blog on his website a few years ago Dan’s interest in all things digital has pushed him to learn, write and teach about many aspects of photography from HDSLR movie making to HDR photography and of course share his knowledge about ski and snowboard photography.

Post-NAB HDSLR Wrap Up

All the HDSLR news you need to know about from NAB 2012

image

The National Association of Broadcasters show has just wrapped up in Las Vegas and I was down there for a few days to check out some of the new gear.  I’ll be covering some products in more detail in the near future but we’ll start off with a wrap up of some of the coolest new HDSLR gear coming to market this spring and summer.

Canon Announces The EOS-1D C - Packs 4K Video Into The EOS-1D X !

Is this the ultimate combo cam ?  18MP stills & 4K video

image

With just a few days until NAB 2012 Canon have unveiled two new additions to their Cinema EOS lineup.  You can read all about the C500, their new cinema camera, over on our sister site PVC but here on PPC I want to talk a little bit more about the new EOS-1D C which I think is safe to say is now Canon’s flagship HDSLR.  Combining all the photographic features of the previously announced EOS-1D X, but now adding 4k video recording as well, Canon have produced something unique.

Nikon Launches The 36MP D800

image

Nikon has unveiled the new D800 today which features a 36MP full frame sensor along with all of the video function improvements we saw on the D4.  In an interesting twist, Nikon will also be offering a D800E which is identical except for the omission of the anti-aliasing filter.  This should provide increased sharpness in that variation, but at the expense of possible aliasing on patterned subjects.  With the enormous processing power needed to deal with a 36MP image it comes as no surprise that the D800 is capable of a lower fps burst than it’s predecessor. 4fps in FX mode and 6fps in DX mode.  It’s somewhat puzzling to see that they have also opted to go for two different flash card mediums and notably excluded the XQD format that was introduced in the D4.

Hands On With The Canon G1 X

image

Canon surprised many people with the introduction of this camera last week.  A large (1.5′) sensor camera with a fixed zoom lens is a unique product in the marketplace and I can see it being a popular solution with their target audience being people who already have a pro DSLR.  At CES this week in Las Vegas I was able to get my hands on a G1 X and also to have a quick chat with Canon representative Ben Thomas about the camera.

For full press release info and all the official photos head on over here.  For my first impressions please read on.

Nikon At CES With The New D4

Hands on impressions with Nikon’s latest flagship

image

At the beginning of January Nikon launched their new flagship pro camera, the D4.    At CES in Las Vegas Nikon had a predictably large presence with the D4 and various other cameras with a strong push towards DSLR video production as well.  I was able to get some hands on time with the D4 to check out some of the new features.

A Look At JVC’s New 4K Camera And The Future Larger Sensor Interchangeable Lens Version

Intriguing first public look at prototype JVC 4k camera

image

At CES JVC officially launched the GY-HMQ10 which is said to be the world’s first handheld 4K camera.  A walk through the JVC booth also yielded a further surprise though, tucked away in a corner, behind glass was another 4K camera but this one had a Nikon F-Mount.  This is the first time the camera has been shown in public and whilst it’s very much a work in progress , the interchangeable lenses and larger sensor than the HMQ10 make this look like a very interesting proposition with a possible price point of $10,000.  I took a few minutes to talk with Craig Yanagi from JVC about both of these cameras.

Here at CES Fujifilm launched what is set to be one of the hottest cameras of 2012, the X-Pro 1.  All the specs and press release can be found on yesterdays posting but today I was able to get my hand on one for the first time.

Fuji Launches New X-Pro 1 And 3 Lenses

Fuji’s first foray into the interchangeable lens, large sensor market

image

Fuji has launched their brand new camera system with a new camera, the X-Pro 1 and three fast primes lenses.  The camera follows on from the ever popular X100 with a classic retro styling and is outfitted with a 16MP APS-C sized sensor.  Initially three lenses will be available (18mm f2 , 35mm f1.4 , 60mm f2 Macro) but Fuji has already spoken of two more lenses to come this year and several zooms next year.  It’s only January but this already looks like it could be the hottest camera of the year though it has a $1700 body only price tag that puts it squarely in the pro market.

Canon Creates Its Own Space In The Marketplace With The G1 X

Small camera, surprisingly large sensor

image

With the mirrorless camera market undeniably in expansion Canon have been the only major manufacturer not to join the party.  Nikon took their time with the 1-Series and rather than battling it out with Olympus, Panasonic and Sony they decided to create their own space for the V1 and J1 cameras by implementing a much smaller sensor than Micro Four Thirds (or APS-C in the case of the Sony NEXs).  This was a smart move on Nikons part as it likely prevented 1-series sales from cannibalizing lower end DSLR sales.  What Canon have chosen to do though is entirely different…

Video Feature Improvements In The Nikon D4

image

Nikon have just unveiled the new D4 and with it comes some significant improvements in the video functionality.  When Canon launched their new EOS 1D X they too included a large number of video improvements, enough for a full article about them.  Canon arguably started the so-called DSLR revolution with the 5dMK2 but can Nikon beat them at their own game ?  Let’s take a look at what the D4 has to offer in this area.

Nikon Unveils The New D4

Pro model DSLR with major video improvements.

image

Just a few days before the PMA / CES show in Las Vegas, Nikon have unveiled their latest flagship camera, the D4.  Featuring a 16MP full frame sensor capable of shooting photos up to 11fps and iso 204,8000.  Perhaps the biggest surprise though is the development of Nikon’s HD video capabilities.  Among other things the D4 can not only shoot 1080p to the camera’s onboard cards, but also output an uncompressed video signal through the HDMI port for high quality recording on an external recording device.

10 Things You May Not Know About The Canon EOS C300 & Future Of Cinema EOS

image

I did a post similar to this on the recently announced EOS 1DX which people seemed to enjoy so here we are again with another one.  This time I was able to have a short conversation with Erik Allin from Canon today , who works out of their Hollywood branch and was a technical specialist in the research of the C300.  The chat turned up a couple of new interesting pieces of information that I’ve added here.

Photography: What’s real, what’s not and does it matter?

Matt Brandon | 05/08- 07:38 PM

Is there such a thing as integrity in a photograph?

I got some flack on Facebook about a past post on my blog . I received a comment from a reader or two stating they felt that what they saw in the produced images was not real. Meaning, after running through my workflow in Lightroom the images no longer represented reality. I have gotten this kind of feedback many times in the past. I think people are rather shocked at seeing a photo “undressed”. It’s a bit like seeing a high-fashion model on the streets without any makeup, it can be scary.
